The Sun
One of the beliefs that we get fed about healing is that healing only counts when the other person goes first. That makes sense when we consider that oppressive paradigms have sought to violently decenter us from our own experiences. We haven’t been taught to check in with ourselves first.
Because of this, healing is often viewed as something external to ourselves that we need to find a way to control. And being centered is viewed as something that we must strive to achieve.
However, I believe that the idea of fighting to be “centered” is rooted in a misperception. Because the truth is that no matter what I’ve been taught, I’ve always been the center of my own Universe.
My awareness is my anchor and I am the Sun.
I believe that everybody is the Sun of their own Universe. And that aligning with this truth, gives us more options. It enables us to come home to what is actually ours to heal. What have we internalized about ourselves and each other? What beliefs require our attention? What emotions are asking to be held and seen? And it gives us the opportunity to meet ourselves in what we need.
From this place, I’ve found that I prefer to be in relationships and communities that center Love.
When Love is centered then setting boundaries and stating my needs is how I love myself. When Love is centered then I care about how my actions impact the people around me because I love them. When Love is centered I take responsibility for the debris floating in my Universe, for the wounds that are mine to heal, and I do it with a lot of compassion because that’s what love would do. When Love is centered conflict and disagreements are gently welcomed - because even conflict can teach us how to love.
When love is centered our humanity isn’t treated as an inconvenience but as an ever-expanding opportunity to embody love.
